Useful when
- You want to understand your carrier status before marriage or planning a family.
- A partner or close relative carries sickle cell trait or thalassaemia.
- A clinician has recommended a haemoglobinopathy or genotype screen.
This blood test looks for haemoglobin variants that may indicate a carrier state or an inherited haemoglobin condition. The pharmacist-led service includes private sample collection and testing through a UKAS-registered laboratory provider.
Planning ahead for marriage or family? Book a Thalassaemia & Sickle Cell genotype blood test at Manchester Chemist. Quick appointment, professional pharmacist-led service, and results sent securely.
This laboratory screen examines haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, for variants associated with sickle cell and thalassaemia. It can help identify whether you may be a carrier and whether further clinical interpretation or testing is appropriate.
A carrier result is not the same as having sickle cell disease or thalassaemia. Results should be reviewed in the context of your personal and family history, previous blood results and the laboratory's interpretation.
If a variant is identified, particularly when planning a pregnancy, speak with your GP, specialist team or genetic counsellor. Testing a partner may also be recommended because inherited risk depends on both parents' haemoglobin genes.
